Tax-compliant payroll engine

A payslip has to hold up under inspection, line by line. This engine calculates, but it also shows where each figure comes from: the statute that imposes it, and the working, replayable on demand.

Context

The scales change every year, sometimes mid-year. A payroll officer starting from last year’s spreadsheet is applying expired rules without knowing it, and the gap only shows up at inspection time, too late to be quietly fixed.

Challenge

Every rule had to be traceable back to its legal source by a third party, with no need to take the studio’s word for it. And the engine had to stay right as the scales change, not only on the day it went into service.

Our approach

The official texts were read at the source rather than copied from scales reproduced elsewhere, because a second-hand mistake spreads without leaving a trace. Every rule in the engine carries the reference it rests on and the period it applies to. The test sets are built on real cases checked by hand: the moment a calculation drifts, the suite fails before anything ships.

Result

The engine runs in production, and its compliance can be checked straight against the statute in force.
